Dibs Barisic Sprem Gabriola Pride Committee Dust off your brightest colours when you pull out your summer wardrobe – because it’s Pride festival season! Last year over 500 attendees headed to Ravenskill Orchard for Gabriola Pride Celebrations. This year we are prepared for similar numbers to flock to the same venue for food, dancing, live performances, & community celebrations. Across the province, pride celebrations in British Columbia are incredibly diverse. Huge events in the Lower Mainland are just a dot on the map of the festival ecosystem that draws International crowds and brings local communities together. Like many rural B.C. celebrations, Gabriola Pride relies on the sheer willpower of unpaid volunteers rather than corporate dollars. To ensure the festival remains professional and safe, organizers use year-round grassroots fundraisers—including the highly popular Drag Bingo nights—to secure the revenue needed to pay local vendors, musicians, and service providers for their work. If you are able to volunteer a couple of hours within the time frame of June 12 to June 14, please contact Kevin Moroso (kevin.moroso@hotmail.com). Volunteering is a great way to socialise without social pressure of conversation. There is also a wonderful feeling of working towards a common goal. No special skills required! Tasks involve setting up tents, collecting donations, and general tear-down activities. This year Gabriolans can enjoy a wide range of Pride themed festivities. Friday June 12 is the opening party for Living Out Loud: Queer Art on Gabriola. This exhibition will be held at Nova Boutique and Gallery (575 North Road), and runs until June 28. On Saturday June 13 at 12pm, there will be a pet parade from Agi Hall to the Village. Domestic animals, on leash only. Get creative with outfits for handlers and animals! At 1 pm on June 13 the cidery will be open to guests, with the official Pride event taking place from 2 pm–10 pm. On site there will be food trucks, live bands, open mic/stage, drag, and kids’ activities. More information can be found at gabriolapride.com BACK TO TOP
