Another spectacular day of racing at the 2026 Canadian national road championships in Saint-Georges, Que. Saturday saw the junior, under-17 men and para riders go for maple leaf jerseys and medals. In the under-17 men, it was Joshua Tyers of Team Ontario taking the win, over Isaac Larose (Équipe du Québec) and Mathis Malois (CC de l’Académie). Under-17 men 1. Jon Mercier (Quebec) 2.

In second was EF Education-Oatly’s Alex Volstad, just ahead of Movistar’s Olivia Baril. Great to see Baril with a fine result again. Defending champ Alison Jackson (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93) finished fourth.

For Coles-Lyster, the win comes less than a year after she underwent surgery for flow limitation in the iliac artery (FLIA). Since returning, the 27-year-old has won the Tour Down Under Women’s One Day Race, took a stage podium at the Giro d’Italia Women and now adds another maple leaf jersey to her growing collection of championship jerseys. “It kind of feels like a full circle moment,” Coles-Lyster said.

“The first title I won was in 2022, before I’d really made my European debut and entered the WorldTour circuit. It’s been quite a few years, and with my surgery last year, this is kind of my comeback year. So to be able to win it again and race another year with the Maple Leaf is a pretty special thing.” The race remained aggressive throughout the day, with attacks constantly reshaping the front of the field.

A breakaway of seven riders gained time inside the final 20 km, but hesitation among the leaders allowed the chase to reconnect before the finish. “There were lots of moves happening. On almost every riser, you just had to be in a good position and pay attention because they were trying to go up the road,” she said.

“It seemed like there were enough riders in the group who wanted it to come down to a bunch sprint, which played wonderfully in my favour.” Coles-Lyster stayed near the front through the technical final kilometre before launching her sprint. “I opened up my sprint with about 250 metres to go on the small riser and was able to just hold them off for the line,” she said. The win means she’ll wear the Canadian champion’s jersey for the second time in her career.

“Winning my second elite title is pretty sweet,” she said. “I had to push hard on the climbs, but then I conserved as much as I could once we were over them and played all my cards in for that sprint.” Results powered by FirstCycling.com Para races There were several para races that began the third day of racing.
