4 charged after man bound with tape, beaten and left in southwestern Manitoba woods

Three men and a teenager have been charged after a 19-year-old man was bound with tape and assaulted before being abandoned near a wooded area in the RM of Killarney-Turtle Mountain earlier this week, RCMP say.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday, Killarney RCMP received a report of an assault on a 19-year-old victim in the southwestern Manitoba rural municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain. The 19-year-old was getting ready to leave the community in a vehicle when he was attacked by multiple people who held him down, wrapped him in a blanket, and bound his ankles and hands with electrical tape, RCMP said in a Friday news release.

Three of the attackers were partially masked. The victim was assaulted with a stick before the attackers took two cellphones and two small knives from him. They loaded him into the back of an off-road vehicle and dropped him off near a wooded area some distance away, according to police.

The 19-year-old eventually freed himself from the tape and went home, police say. Four people from the rural municipality, who range in age from 16 to 31 years old, were arrested in connection with the incident. RCMP said those accused and the victim knew each other.

Three men — a 22-year-old, 26-year-old and 31-year-old — were charged with forcible confinement, robbery, using a disguise with the intent to commit a crime and overcoming resistance in order to commit a crime, police said. A 16-year-old boy was charged with forcible confinement, robbery with a weapon and overcoming resistance to commit a crime. All four were released with conditions.
