Almost two million unmarked cigarettes discovered during traffic stop

Ontario Provincial Police say a traffic stop in Ancaster led to a big haul of contraband tobacco.

Ontario Provincial Police say they recovered approximately 2,000,000 unmarked cigarettes during a traffic stop in Ancaster. On July 14, around 5:35 p.m., officers from the Brant County detachment pulled the vehicle over on Wilson Street West. OPP said the contraband tobacco was seized and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The driver, a 36-year-old from Phelpston, Ont., was charged with trafficking contraband tobacco, possession of unmarked cigarettes for sale, possession of unmarked cigarettes, driving a motor vehicle without a permit, using a plate that was not authorized for a vehicle, two counts of operating a vehicle while failing to display an inspection sticker or proof, and failure to stop at a stop sign. A 57-year-old from Bala, Ont. was also charged with permitting use of plate not authorized for a vehicle.
