Mounties on Vancouver Island are warning the public about a fraudulent letter circulating that claims to be from the RCMP and demands payment to avoid criminal charges. In a news release Wednesday, West Shore RCMP said the letter falsely claims to be from the RCMP’s National Cybercrime Co-ordination Centre and other organizations. It accuses recipients of serious offences involving child sexual exploitation and threatens criminal prosecution unless they pay a fine within 24 hours.
“The fraudsters behind these letters are relying on fear and urgency to manipulate victims into complying with their demands,” Cpl. Nancy Saggar said in the release. “If you receive one of these letters, do not respond, do not send money, and do not provide any personal or financial information.”
RCMP added that the letter contains several warning signs of fraud, including fabricated criminal allegations, threats of public exposure, demands for a quick response and

Mounties are urging anyone who receives this type of letter to ignore its demands, avoid responding or sending money, and keep it as evidence. They also encourage people to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and their local police detachment.
