CBC/Radio-Canada to open five new international bureaus

Public broadcaster plans to expand its news division with offices in Beijing, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, Mexico City and an undisclosed location in Europe

CBC/Radio-Canada says it will expand its English and French news divisions with five new international bureaus over the next two years. The public broadcaster says the expansion consists of putting journalists in Beijing, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, Mexico City and an undisclosed location in Europe. CBC News currently has bureaus in Istanbul, London, Mumbai, New York City, Paris, Taipei and Washington D.C., and officials say there will soon be a permanent presence in Africa.

Editor-in-Chief Brodie Fenlon says the expansion comes during a time when many international stories could have an impact on Canada. The broadcaster also says Radio-Canada will launch a weekly French international news program this fall, in which host Céline Galipeau will dig deeper into complex global events. The expansion comes after CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union, allowing the broadcaster to take part in the Eurovision song contest and the Eurovision news exchange.
