Co-op and Prairie Clean Enterprises partner to bring local cat litter to shelves

Prairie Clean Enterprises (PCE) has announced an agreement with Federated Co-operatives Limited to bring a local product for cat owners to shelves across western Canada.

Prairie Clean Enterprises (PCE) has announced an agreement with Federated Co-operatives Limited to bring a local product for cat owners to shelves across western Canada. Prairie Clean Litter, which is made entirely out of flax straw and produced in Weyburn, Sask., will be stocked exclusively in Co-op stores. The announcement was made at the Harbour Landing Co-op Food Store in Regina on Thursday.

It comes one year after PCE partnered with the Regina Humane Society to become their litter supplier. The product has been used by cats in the shelter for the past year and each cat adopted goes home with a complimentary bag. According to a release from the company on Thursday, the litter offers cat owners a natural and high performing alternative to traditional litters, while producing low dust and less smell.

Brita Lind, co-owner of Prairie Clean Enterprises, explained how the product is made at the facility, the only multi-processing flax facility in the world. “We actually process it, and we remove the fibre that we sell into Europe for pulp and specialty paper. And then the shive, which is the woodier part, we pelletize that,” Lind said.

The company hopes to expand to five to seven more facilities across the Prairies.
