Field house will be a gathering space for sports and community events

Elevate Construction chosen to build new field house in Fernie Published 9:57 am Wednesday, July 15, 2026 The Elk Valley Field House Society (EVFHS) has announced they have chosen Elevate Construction as the builder for the Elk Valley Field House in Fernie, BC. The non-profit organization and construction company have been finalizing architectural and engineering plans over the past month.

The company, based out of Lethbridge, will also serve as project manager for the building. “We would like to thank the Elk Valley Field House Society for selecting Elevate Construction to be part of their exciting new project,” said Blayne Janssens, President and Partner of Elevate Construction, in a news release. The Elk Valley Field House will be built on the current location of the outdoor ice rink, across from the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

The Society recently reached a lease and operating agreement with the City, allowing the project to move forward. A new recreation and social gathering space is desperately needed in a town that thrives on recreation. Formation of the Society was “driven by a need to fill a significant gap in recreation and gathering space since the closure of the Fernie Community Centre,” according to their website.

The new multi-use facility will include pickleball courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, soccer areas and a full-sized tennis court. It will also be a dryland training facility for rugby and Nordic/alpine skiing while incorporating a variety of other sporting options such as ball hockey, netball and martial arts. Senior walking will be available for those looking to avoid the elements.

The Field House will also be a hub for community. Concerts, film festivals, sporting tournaments, trade shows and private functions are just a few of the social gatherings proposed by EVFHS. The new partnership with Elevate Construction marks a major step forward in a project that had multiple bidders.

“We had five companies bid on the project and, in the end, Elevate Construction provided us, and the community, with the best bang for the buck,” said Aysha Haines, spokesperson for EVFHS. Elevate Construction currently runs over 20 projects across Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. According to a statement issued by the company: “We are proud of our ability to partner with local organizations, companies, consultants, and trades on projects or joint ventures.

We are committed to investing in local communities and charities by way of monetary and time donation as well as hiring of local work force where applicable. Our senior management team sits on multiple charity and community boards, and provincial board of directors. This allows us to stay relevant and contribute both to the construction industry as well as the communities.”

A draft building permit has been submitted to the City of Fernie in the next step before breaking ground on the new facility.
