Emergency readiness comes to North Okanagan Published 7:00 pm Saturday, July 11, 2026 With the North Okanagan facing another hot, dry summer, and the ongoing threat of wildfires, extreme heat and power outages, an Emergency Preparedness Workshop for older adults is being offered on Wednesday, July 22 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the NexusBC Community Resource Centre. The free, one-hour workshop helps hundreds of older adults across the region feel more confident and prepared to respond during emergencies. “Emergencies can happen with little warning, and having a plan in place can make a significant difference,” said Lee Brinkman of NexusBC

Community Resource Centre. “This workshop provides practical information and simple steps older adults can take to protect themselves, stay connected, and be better prepared when emergencies occur.” Participants will learn things like how to prepare for emergencies common in the Okanagan including wildfires and extreme heat, how to create a personalized emergency plan, what to include in a grab-and-go kit and ways to stay informed and connected during an emergency.

The workshop is designed specifically with older adults in mind and focuses on practical, achievable preparedness measures that can provide peace of mind for individuals and their families. “We know many people intend to prepare but often put it off until an emergency is already unfolding,” says Brinkman. “Taking an hour now to make a plan can save a great deal of stress later.
