Evacuation alerts lifted for Labrador West

The Town of Labrador City has lifted the evacuation alerts for the Walsh River area, as well as Duley Lake, Throne Lake and the area of the Tamarack Golf Course.

In an update posted to social media shortly after 4:30 p.m. NT, the town said the alerts were lifted based on a change in status of the Walsh River wildfire. It was listed as under control on Monday.

"While the wildfire situation has improved significantly, residents may continue to see firefighting personnel, equipment, helicopters, and other wildfire response resources operating in the area over the coming days," the update reads. The town asked residents to "continue respecting" any equipment in place, including structural protection equipment in the Walsh River area. The equipment will be removed, beginning Tuesday, by the Labrador City Fire Department with support from forestry crews.

As of 6:30 p.m. NT, the province had 24 active wildfires. All were located in Labrador. Of the five wildfires that had been burning out of control in the area of the twin Labrador West communities as of Canada Day, one fire has since been extinguished, according to provincial forestry mapping, while three — including the Walsh Lake fire — are under control, and one is categorized as being held.

The latter is known as the Fifth Lake fire and is 11 kilometres from the nearest community. Meanwhile, Labrador City Mayor Jordan Brown and Wabush Mayor Gertie Canning are scheduled to join Labrador West MHA Joe Power for a news conference Tuesday morning with Forestry Minister Pleamon Forsey. A notice issued by the provincial government on Monday said the announcement is "regarding wildfire suppression and emergency service resources."
