Wildfires can start, spread easily in current conditions, says Alberta Wildfire
CANMORE – Fire danger is very high in Canmore, Kananaskis Country, the MD of Bighorn and Stoney Nakoda First Nation, says Alberta Wildfire. The fire danger was bumped up from moderate as of Tuesday (July 14) and now also includes a fire advisory. “Vegetation is drying out, making it easier to burn,” states an Alberta Wildfire update for the Calgary Forest Area.
“Wildfires can easily start and spread in these conditions. Please use caution with any outdoor activity.” Under a fire advisory, existing fire permits remain valid but new permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
Alberta Wildfire is reminding everyone to recreate responsibly while fire danger is high and while the advisory is in place. It will not be lifted until conditions improve. “While campfires are still allowed during the current fire advisory, please exercise caution,” said Alberta Wildfire.
“Campfires should be kept small, so you can control them and extinguish them quickly if needed.” Alberta’s wildfire season began March 1. Since Jan. 1, there have been 38 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, burning more than 21 hectares.
