“It was raining garbage.” Thomas suspected the garbage was coming from the regional district landfill a couple of kilometres away, but that has not been confirmed. The debris she saw included pieces of styrofoam, a parking ticket, a medical supply bag, an empty bag of jellybeans and other items.

Several people, including Thomas and some offshore paddleboarders, picked up some of the garbage. “We could see it falling. People were like 'What is happening?

Where is this coming from?” she said. “It looked like it was coming from the area near the dump.”
