Makeovers have begun in Port Alberni, where the HGTV series Home Town Takeover Canada is now filming and changing up spaces in that community. The post ‘It’s bringing a pride back’: Filming of HGTV’s Home Town Takeover begins in Port Alberni appeared first on CHEK .

Port Alberni is getting a new look and an increasing number of tourists are taking notice this summer. Shannon Vanderhill owns Turtle Island Fish & Chips in Port Alberni’s Harbour Quay, and says there’s been a steady stream of new tourists there, as filming of the HGTV Series Home Town Takeover Canada makes over several small businesses, homes and public areas. “Seeing it all get redone and make it look pretty nice is pretty cool,” Vanderhill told CHEK News on Wednesday. “The first week when they announced the home town makeover, it was so busy because we had everyone come in to check it all out.” Port Alberni’s mayor says the show’s arrival has been overwhelmingly positive so far.

“It’s bringing a pride back to our community as well. That we haven’t been missing, but you know, looking for a boost. You know our community has been through a lot of hard times and so it feels like something we’re due for in the most wonderful way,” said Sharie Minions.

Yet Brittany Akerly says her family’s shops, The Sugar Shack, and the Number 5 Cafe, have lost an estimated 50 per cent in business since the show’s construction in Harbour Quay closed off both of their front doors. Akerly says many people think that businesses behind the construction are closed. “These are the months that carry us through the winter...

So this could be a hard one,” Akerly told CHEK News. Se urges people who are visiting Harbour Quay to see the show to stop at the businesses that are now hidden behind it. Filming is due to wrap up on HGTV’s Home Town Takeover Canada at the end of August, and the show is scheduled to air in November.
