Local roundup: Schinkelshoek on Team Canada; Pool Shark medals; Butzer, Rombouts win

The meet also includes swimmers from the United States, Japan, Australia and some European countries. “I am so pleased to be a member of the Junior Pan Pac team,” Schinkelshoek said in a statement.

“I have had this on my goal board since the start of the season and am very happy to be a part of this amazing group of swimmers that will represent Canada.” Schinkelshoek recently won two medals in the junior men’s division at the Canadian trials in Montreal. Then, he won four medals at the Ontario championships in Toronto and shared the high points award in the 17-and-over division.

He won gold in the 50-metre backstroke (26.59 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (51.17 seconds) and placed 10th in the 200 individual medley. He also helped the Windsor Aquatic Club win gold in the 4×50 freestyle relay for 17-and-over boys, silver in the 4×200 freestyle relay and place fourth in the 4×100 medley relay. Sharks’ Cooper wins Ontario silver Francis Cooper of the Chatham Pool Sharks won a silver medal and earned personal-best times in his four events at the Ontario swimming championships in Toronto.

Cooper was second in the 50-metre backstroke for 11-and-under boys in 35.09 seconds. He was also seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:18.63), 10th in the 100 freestyle (1:09.74) and 27th in the 200 freestyle. Chatham’s Payton Rinas of the Windsor Aquatic Club was 11th in the 100 backstroke and 20th in the 200 backstroke for 17-and-over girls.

Tennyson Denure of the Blenheim Blast was 15th in the 100 butterfly, 21st in the 50 butterfly, 22nd in the 50 backstroke and 28th in the 100 backstroke for 11-and-under boys. Butzer wins twice on Unico golf tour Maple City’s Hannah Butzer won twice this week on the Unico Primo Junior Golf Tour in the collegiate women’s division. Butzer shot a 78 Wednesday at Essex Golf and Country Club and a 74 Monday at Seven Lakes Championship Golf.

She has three wins in four tour stops this season. Maple City’s Kassandra Rombouts also has three wins in the junior girls’ division after placing first at Essex with a 74. Essex’s Henrik Mingay led the junior boys with a 70.

At Seven Lakes, Rombouts placed second after losing a playoff to Beach Grove’s Madelaine Beck. Each shot a 74. Kingsville’s Brady Toupin beat Essex’s Finlay Burns in a playoff in the junior boys’ division after each shot a 69.

Sutton Creek’s Ben Buchner defeated Beach Grove’s Bennett Brazier in a playoff for the collegiate men’s title after each had a 71. The next tour stop is Sunday at Willow Ridge Golf and Country Club in Blenheim.
