The East division foes combined for nine home runs in the contest, with Regina coming out on top 11-8. It’s a split of the weekend series between Regina an Medicine Hat, the Mavs beating the Red Sox 10-6 on Friday. Head coach Ryan Reed liked his team’s ability to go back and forth with Regina.

“Any tough, tight situation game, I think it prepares you for a postseason run,” Reed said. “Obviously we’d like to come out on the other side of these, but this group’s so tough and they’re going to continue to bounce back and grow from these moments.” Regina launched the first home run of the game, with a two-run blast from centre fielder Ian Montz.

The Mavs responded in the bottom of the second with a solo home run from third baseman Nick Hill, his second in three games. He finished the contest with two hits and three RBIs, giving him six hits, four RBIs, two home runs and a .462 batting average in three games. “Nick’s a stud, anytime he plays, I’m impressed,” Reed said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with that guy for two years now and I know what he’s capable of doing. But he always continues to impress me.” The Mavs grabbed a lead in the bottom of the third with a four-run inning.

Utility man Blake Dale had an RBI single and designated hitter Frankie Giacalone drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. They scored two runs on a double off the left field wall from Hill for a 5-2 lead. Regina, not to be outdone, scored five runs in the fourth inning for a 7-5 lead.

DH Cooper Jones launched a three-run home run and two batters later, right fielder Jalen Meyers hit a two-run home run. An inning later, the Mavs had their own multi home run inning to tie the game. First baseman Evan Morrison led off the frame with a solo home run to right centre field for his fourth of the season and one pitch later, Dale launched a home run to the same spot for his seventh on the summer.

Julian Pokorny started for the Mavs, working 3.1 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out one. Jax Graham took over in the fourth inning, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair in 1.2 innings of work. Beck Button took over on the mound for the Mavs to start the sixth and quickly worked two outs.

He had two strikes on left fielder Justin Simard before he went big fly, with a solo home run to left field for an 8-7 Regina lead. Simard drove a run in with a single in the eighth inning off Tanner Hail for a 8-7 Red Sox lead. Regina added two runs in the top of the ninth, with a wall-scraping, two-run home run from first baseman Will Togher, putting the Red Sox ahead 11-7.

Outfielder Carson Chan pinch hit in the ninth for the Mavs, his first appearance since July 1. He jumped on the second pitch he saw, pulling a solo home run to right field for his third of the season. That was as close as the Mavs’ comeback bid could get, falling 11-8.

Hail took the loss, working three innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk, striking out four. The Mavs (16-19) are off Sunday before they host the Swift Current 57’s on Monday for the first of six games in five days this week ahead of WCBL all-star weekend. 17 -16
