jtubb@medicinehatnews.com @ReporterTubb The Medicine Hat Mavericks flipped the cassette Tuesday during doubleheader action at Athletic Park. After being shutout 10-0 in eight innings by the Sylvan Lake Gulls the Mavs rebounded, beating the Weyburn Beavers 7-5 to split the day.

The pair of games tallies the Mavs up to three contests in two days. Head coach Ryan Reed is proud of how his team responded throughout the day. “Just how tough these guys are, bouncing back from that first one unfazed, answering after we gave up a round in the first, it’s a really tough group,” Reed said.

“I’ve been saying it all summer, these guys are tough as nails. They’re fighters, they’re always going to punch back. They’re never going to back down from a fight, I’m just really proud of them.”

In the first game, the Gulls tallied five home runs en route to the win. Sylvan Lake opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the third inning from Dominic Giusti. They tallied six runs in the fourth inning all via the longball.

Charlie Collins launched a grand slam and the next two batters, Elijha Hammill and Johnboy Rittenhouse recorded solo home runs for an 8-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Elias Duncan hit a two-run home run for the 10-0 score, setting up the mercy rule. Danny Retzlaff started the game for the Mavs, working 3.2 innings with seven runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out three.

Evan Morrison had two hits in the loss. The Medicine Hat product was one of the offensive leaders in the win over Weyburn, tallying three hits and an RBI, scoring twice. He says they knew they had to rebound and pick up a win in the division matchup with the Beavers.

“They’re pretty tight with us right now so we’re just trying to squeeze out every win we can, especially against those guys who are close with us in the standings,” Morrison said. “Those games might mean a little extra us and that’s why we kind of have more of a fire. But we’re just trying to get every win right now.”

Weyburn opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, Brayden Mayencourt launching a two-out blast to right field. The Mavs responded with a three-run bottom of the first, also with a little help from the long ball. First baseman Frankie Giacalone notched an RBI single before third baseman Nick Hill, with two outs, blasted a two-run home run for a 3-1 lead.

It was just the first firework on the evening from Hill, who finished the evening with a second home run, his fourth of the season. He recorded three hits, four RBIs and scored twice in the win. Hill says they just executed better against Weyburn and were ready for a different result.

“I think the boys are just fed up with losing, we just want to win, that’s it. Everybody on the field today wanted to win,” Hill said. ” Things just went our way and we came out with it.”

Weyburn grabbed another lead in the game with a three-run second inning, a pair of runs coming on a home run from Austin Boylan. The Mavs tied the game up for a second time, Hill driving in a run with a single in the bottom of the third. Mavs starter Cody Myers worked five innings, allowing the four runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out seven.

Jax Graham pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits as Weyburn lead 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth. The Mavs regained a lead, tallying their second three-run inning of the game led off by Hill’s second home run of the game. They scored twice more with an RBI single from designated hitter Eric Calder and a double from Morrison.

Tanner Hail took the mound to start the eighth, working the last two innings of the game as he stranded three hits and recorded two punch outs. The pitching performances against Weyburn was what the doctor, or Reed in this case, ordered. “Preventing the big innings is huge on the defensive side, that’s what’s been putting un in the hole,” Reed said.

“I’m proud of the bullpen and the whole pitching staff there to bounce back after the first one today.” The Mavs (17-21) busy week continues, heading to Okotoks on Wednesday to face the Dawgs before the host the Saskatoon Berries on Thursday and Friday ahead of the WCBL all-star game Saturday and Sunday in Saskatoon. 22 -21
