Nearly 200 wildfires are blazing across northern Ontario, already burning a larger swath of land than all of last year’s fires. Premier Doug Ford says more than 150 fire crews and 80 water bombers and helicopters are battling the blazes. Information from the Ministry of Natural Resources shows 20 new fires were confirmed Friday in the northeast region alone.

Ford says 10 northern communities have already been evacuated or have evacuations underway, and four more are preparing for possible evacuations. Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) will be collecting donations to support Namaygoosisagagun First Nation. It will be happening at the 28 th Annual Powwow on July 18 and 19.

“ The smoke that fills our skies today is a result of more than 175 wildfires that are burning across Northern Ontario impacting dozens of communities,” said MSIFN in a statement. “Namaygoosisagagun is particularly vulnerable as they are still in the process of being recognized as a First Nation and do not currently qualify for supports available to other Nations.” Click here to donate.
