Parksville-based club hosts international chess grandmaster to play 50 games at once Published 5:35 am Sunday, July 12, 2026 Chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels will have a rare opportunity to challenge an international grandmaster when the Oceanside Chess Club hosts a simultaneous chess exhibition on Friday, Aug. 1. The event, to take place at Lounge C at Beban Park (2300 Bowen Rd.) in Nanaimo, will feature guest Grandmaster Samy Shoker from San Diego, the reigning European Middleweight Chess Boxing World Champion.

Shoker will take on 50 players at the same time in a simultaneous exhibition, commonly known as a “simul.” Over the course of approximately 31⁄2 hours, Shoker will move from board to board, competing against every participant in what promises to be a remarkable display of concentration, endurance and strategic skill. The simul will run from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is open to players of all experience levels.

Following the exhibition, Shoker will lead a post-game lecture, analyzing key positions from the matches and sharing insights to help participants improve their understanding of the game. Organizers hope the event will inspire both experienced players and newcomers to discover the many benefits of chess, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and community connection. Hosted by the Parksville-based Oceanside Chess Club, the event also serves as a fundraiser for the club’s ongoing efforts to promote chess throughout the region.

All proceeds will be reinvested into programs and activities that encourage learning, sportsmanship, and community engagement through the game. Whether participants hope to challenge a grandmaster, learn from one of the world’s top players, or simply experience a memorable day of chess, the event offers a unique opportunity that is rarely available on Vancouver Island.
