On July 7, Regina police responded to a home in the 800 block of Elphinstone Street after a report of a man firing a crossbow and threatening occupants inside the home, according to a news release from the Regina Police Service. Police say there was an altercation, during which the 35-year-old man pointed the crossbow at two responding officers.

The police shot and injured the man. Officers did first aid on the scene until EMS arrived, the release says. Paramedics transported the man to the hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The man is scheduled to make his first appearance in Regina provincial court later this month. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), the province's police oversight agency, is investigating the officers' shooting of the man separately. SIRT is an independent, civilian-led unit mandated "to investigate when someone dies or is seriously injured while in police custody or as a result of a police officer's actions."
