SANDRA M STANWAY Brooks Bulletin Mother Nature proved her worth over the weekend providing enough wind for sailors at the annual Prairie Wind Regatta on Lake Newell. More than 60 boats and 70 sailors from Alberta, Saskatchewan,Manitoba and British Columbia participated in the Newell Sailing Club’s annual event. “It was a good event,” said John Cormack, race officer.

“It was an excellent event really. Everyone was happy about it.” The weekend was expected for a local sailing club event with racing, racing protests, food and lots of time to socialize.

The prairie wind’s started quite light, about 14km on Saturday but they steadily increased. “Later on Saturday there were fantastic races and on Sunday the wind kept building and it was just perfect for them,” said Cormack. He said many races who were in the middle of the fleet would change position and often win thanks to the change in wind speeds.

“People can get better and better over the weekend. The leaders changed. At the end of the day the same people win but it was nice to see other people take that odd spot.”

The club will host the 2026 provincials Sept. 5-7. Cormack hopes it will be as successful as the Prairie Wind Regatta. 420 (Int. or Club) Net 8 1st
