Sir Sadiq Khan has been made a peer by Sir Keir Starmer. The Mayor of London has been elevated to the House of Lords in the Prime Minister's political peerages list, published on Thursday. Sir Sadiq will take his seat on the red benches with Sir Chris Wormald, the former cabinet secretary who was sacked by Sir Keir, and Sir Brian Leveson, a retired senior judge who presided over an inquiry into press standards.

They appeared on a list issued by Downing Street, which said the King had been "graciously pleased to signify his intention of conferring peerages". Sir Sadiq said he was honoured to have been given a peerage. A spokesman said: "London gave Sadiq the opportunities to go from a council estate to being Mayor of London.

"His focus will continue to be ensuring that all Londoners get the same shot at reaching their full potential that London gave him and his family. "Serving as mayor of the greatest city in the world continues to be the privilege of Sadiq's life. "He is excited about what more can be delivered in the years ahead and he will devote his time and energy to standing up for our city and building a fairer, safer and greener London for everyone."

It opens the way to a return to Cabinet for Sir Sadiq, who served as a justice minister under Gordon Brown. However, the spokesman said he was not seeking a ministerial role and had not yet decided whether he would stand for another term as the capital's mayor. A Government
