On July 13, the actress, 49, shared a couple of black-and-white throwback photos of her and Doherty with Deborah Waknin-Harwin, a stylist and costume designer in the industry.
In the snapshots, the trio poses with their arms over their heads and cheeky smiles. "@theshando something tells me this is you and @dewakinstylist today ♥️," Gellar wrote in her caption. Waknin-Harwin was one of Doherty's best friends.
She died in March 2020 from cancer. Doherty died on July 13, 2024, at the age of 53. Her death came years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015.
Doherty's longtime publicist Leslie Sloane told PEOPLE the actress died surrounded by her loved ones and her dog, Bowie. The Beverly Hills 90210 star was open about her Stage 4 cancer and told PEOPLE back in November 2023 that she didn't "want to die." "I'm not done with living.
I'm not done with loving. I'm not done with creating. I'm not done with hopefully changing things for the better," Doherty told PEOPLE.
"I'm just not — I'm not done." Speaking to PEOPLE for her March 2026 cover story, Gellar opened up about her decades-long friendship with Doherty.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star shared that someone recently told her that she and Doherty "enjoyed the f--- out of each other." "We did," she said. "I made sure that I would never have any regrets with Shannen, and I think we did a really good job of it.
I don't think we have any [regrets]." "We didn't waste the time we had," Gellar continued. "And if she said, 'Hey, I have an idea for a crazy adventure.' I'd be like, 'Okay, let's go do it.'"
In the wake of Doherty's death, Gellar reflected on their bond in a tribute posted to Instagram. "How do you possibly find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship? I keep reminding myself it only hurts this much because there was so much love," she wrote.
"Thank you, for all your kind words and support. I love all the messages about how @theshando was important to you. So let's honor her."
"More than anything, Shan loves animals, especially dogs. In her memory let's support our favorite animal charities. Whether that's donating money, stopping by your local shelter and just offering cuddles and walks to animals housed there or even just tagging them in the comments so other people can learn about their work.
I know that would make our girl happy (and [elicit] that deep throaty laugh we all loved)." Read the original article on People
