TEMISKAMING SHORES - One of Temiskaming Shores’ scenic spots for lake watchers is no longer available to the public. In a notice on its municipal website, Temiskaming Shores is advising that the Sydenham Road Lookout overlooking Wabi Bay and Lake Temiskaming is “no longer accessible to the public.” “The area is privately owned and is not an authorized public lookout or recreational facility.

For safety reasons, the private property owner has implemented measures to restrict public access,” Temiskaming Shores Director of Transportation Services Mitch McCrank told The Speaker. “The City is assisting with the implementation of access restrictions.” The hillside property in question - which overlooks the Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park from above the west side of Lakeshore Road - has long been used as an unofficial lookout.

But due to “ongoing concerns at the site,” the city said it is immediately moving to prevent public access to the lookout, and is removing amenities there. As part of the closure, No Trespassing signs are being installed, and concrete barriers are being placed at the entrance to prevent vehicle access “as required.” The city said “routine maintenance activities at the location will cease” and it will remove the garbage receptacle from the site.

“Residents are asked to respect the closure and continue reporting incidents of trespassing, vandalism or suspicious activity to the Ontario Provincial Police,” the city notice reads. “The city appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as these measures are implemented to protect private property, support public safety and address ongoing concerns at the site.”
