Several people are injured and a Brampton man is facing multiple charges after an early morning shooting near Toronto’s waterfront. Toronto police say officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday in the area of Polson Street and Cherry Street. Investigators allege there was an exchange of gunfire between the accused and an unknown suspect.

After allegedly firing a gun, police say the accused stole a rideshare vehicle that had customers on board before fleeing the area “While fleeing the scene, the accused struck pedestrians and vehicles,” police said in a news release. As a result of the incident, two people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, while another person was hospitalized after being struck by the vehicle. Police say the accused also suffered gunshot injuries himself and was also taken to hospital.

All of the injuries are considered non-life-threatening. As a result, 25-year-old Omar Abdul Singateh of Brampton has been arrested as police say they also recovered a firearm from the stolen vehicle. Singateh is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited, robbery, four counts of forcible confinement, dangerous operation causing bodily harm and dangerous operation.

There is no description of the other person involved in the exchange of gunfire and the investigation remains ongoing.
