Severe thunderstorms are projected to hit much of southern Quebec Tuesday afternoon, and Environment Canada is also warning of a risk of a tornado. The weather agency says a severe thunderstorm watch is in place from the Ontario border right to Gaspe, including the Montreal area. “This afternoon and evening, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

There is also a risk of a tornado,” it said in a weather alert for the region. It is warning people to stay off the water because “nautical activities may be hazardous due to sudden, severe wind gusts over bodies of water.” Prior to the storm, expect high temperatures in the Montreal area, with a high of 33 degrees Celsius, with a Humidex 42.

The UV index is 9 or very high. Thunderstorms are expected to end near midnight.
