Severe Thunderstorm Warning in place for much of Island Published 10:14 am Friday, July 17, 2026 Much of Vancouver Island is under a yellow watch for severe thunderstorms for the rest of the day, Friday, July 17. The warning applies to Vancouver Island, excluding the area from Courtenay to Victoria along the east coast. Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain, Environment Canada’s warning says.

“When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Don’t drive through flooded roadways,” the warning says.

There has been some localized flooding in Courtenay, witness reports on social media say. Some businesses have been closed to deal with the clean up. “Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility,” the Environment Canada warning says.

“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.” BC Hydro is listing multiple power outages in Courtenay as well. More to come...
