As a new school year approaches, many student-athletes are preparing for practices, games, and competitions. One of the most important steps before stepping onto the field, court, track, or course is completing a sports physical. These examinations help ensure students are healthy enough to participate in athletics while identifying any concerns that may need attention before the season begins.

Sports physicals are recommended for students participating in school-sponsored sports, as well as many recreational and travel leagues that require medical clearance. Beyond meeting school requirements, sports physicals provide parents with peace of mind by helping detect potential health concerns early. They also give families an opportunity to discuss previous injuries, asthma, allergies, concussion history, or other medical conditions that could affect athletic participation.

Addressing these issues before the season begins can help keep young athletes healthy and performing at their best. To help area families prepare for the upcoming school year, OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center is hosting two convenient sports physical clinics this summer. Clinics will be held Thursday, July 23, from noon to 4 p.m. at the OSF Saint Katharine Center for Health (1307 W. Washington St.) in Oregon, and Thursday, July 30, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at OSF Saint Katharine’s Town Square Centre (102 S. Hennepin Ave.) in Dixon.

Each sports physical costs $35 and payment is accepted by cash or check only. Even better, all proceeds are donated directly back to each student’s school, helping support local education and athletic programs. Parents are encouraged to schedule appointments online and complete this important step before fall sports begin.
