Three people were taken to hospital in serious condition following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Flewellyn and Ormrod roads on Monday afternoon. A utility trailer being towed by the truck had jackknifed and was facing the opposite direction, resting against the vehicle, fire services said in a social media post. Two off-duty firefighters had already arrived at the scene and were assessing the injuries of the driver who had been trapped inside the truck. Specialized extrication tools were used to remove the roof of the truck, but the man’s legs were still pinned beneath the steering wheel.

Hydraulic tools were then used to perform a steering wheel lift, and at 2:45 p.m. his seatbelt was cut to free him. Ottawa fire said the man had suffered a compound fracture and that a tourniquet was applied immediately to control bleeding. According to an Ottawa Paramedic Services spokesperson, in addition to police and fire, three Lanark County Paramedic Service ambulances and the Ottawa Paramedic Response Unit attended the scene.

The driver who was extricated, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital by Lanark paramedics in serious but stable condition, the Ottawa paramedic spokesperson said. A 33-year-old woman and a man in his 70s had been in the SUV. The man was moved to hospital by Air Ornge while Lanark paramedics took the woman to hospital, with both patients in serious but stable condition.
