Thunderstorm watch issued for Calgary Posted Jul 15, 2026 3:36 pm. Last Updated Jul 15, 2026 3:51 pm. Environment Canada has issued a thunderstorm watch for Calgary on Wednesday.

The weather agency says local conditions throughout the afternoon and evening are favourable for producing severe storms capable of bringing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. The threat is expected to continue overnight across central and eastern Alberta. Forecasters say some storms may become severe enough to produce tornadoes, and residents should prepare for possible utility outages and damage to roofs, fences, trees and temporary structures.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions support the development of storms. A thunderstorm warning is issued when existing storms are approaching an area. The warning comes as Alberta continues an exceptionally wet summer.

Environment Canada says Alberta was “hammered” by record-breaking rainfall in June and appears poised to repeat that pattern this month. The province recorded 264 millimetres of rain in June, breaking the previous record of 216 millimetres set in 1914. July has seen 360 millimetres of rain, approaching the 417 millimetre benchmark from 1953.
