Downtown Victoria is buzzing with tourists as nearly 30,000 cruise ship passengers visit from July 10-12, marking one of the busiest weekends of the 2026 summer cruise season. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) says 10 cruise ships will be docking at Ogden Point to bring thousands of visitors into the city, creating an economic boost for local restaurants, attractions, shops, tour operators and waterfront businesses. All of the vessels are stopping in Victoria on their way to or from Alaska.

“It’s one of the boom areas in cruise tourism and that’s because many, many people think that a visit to Alaska is a bucket list item for them,” GVHA communications manager Richard Davies said. Friday brought the biggest wave of tourists with more than 10,800 passengers on four ships. Saturday is set to bring approximately 10,200 visitors, and another 8,700 on Sunday.

Watch more in the video below: Loading the player... Davies says when there are that many people visiting the region, you can feel the energy. “It adds a buzz to the city, especially around the inner harbour,” he said.

“All the people that are going to visit the restaurants, around fisherman’s wharf, they’re probably going to go down to the market at ship point and everyone’s going to benefit.” Local economic impact According to a 2024 economic impact report from Destination Greater Victoria , the cruise ship industry supported more than 1,300 jobs and contributed $109 million to the region’s GDP in 2023. “The average cruise ship passenger spends around $100.

So that’s things like dining, gifts, transportation, but what’s interesting is that crew members tend to spend a bit more,” Davies said. “When they come off they’re stocking up on things like essential supplies and it might be a trip to a supermarket or a pharmacy to get those sort of things.” It’s an economic jump downtown businesses say they notice.

The Bard and Banker Pub says it sees a huge boost every time a cruise ship is in, reaching full capacity at points. “We usually see a big push around 45 minutes after the cruise ship gets in,” Mitch Ellsora, Bard and Banker manager, said. “They’re here until about 11 p.m., so it’s really a big two hour window when the cruise ships come through and then the locals come in and we’re busy all night.

We’re definitely expecting that throughout the whole weekend here.” There are a few more weekends in July, and another in August, where Victoria will see similar passenger numbers arriving. Davies says the city has the capacity to handle more cruise visitors in the spring and autumn when calls are less frequent, which is something the GVHA is exploring.

He adds the number of passengers isn’t the only factor that dictates a successful season. “It’s always exciting to think that people who come here for the first time, will they come back here again on a much longer holiday and that would be probably our ultimate goal,” Davies said. The 2026 cruise ship summer season is expected to be a record-breaking year, bringing 335 vessels and more than 1 million people to Victoria.
