Work begins on Fort St. James’ Cottonwood Marina Published 2:14 pm Friday, July 17, 2026 Major upgrades are now underway at Cottonwood Marina, the waterfront facility on Stuart Lake. Fort St. James first announced the significant transformation on April 14, stating that the marina would remain closed for the 2026 season to allow for the extensive construction work which is now underway. According to director of operations Doug Lowther, the project includes replacing the existing dock anchor system, installing a new breakwater and anchor system, and completing major improvements to the boat launch, patio area, lighting, and navigation beacon.

The district also said the old wooden pilings will be removed and replaced with coated concrete anchors. In its July 15 update, the district said Cottonwood Marina is being upgraded into a full-service marina and recreation hub for the community. Planned additions include a watercraft fueling station, security gates on each of the four ramps leading to the docks, and new rental options beginning in 2027, including inflatable stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, a canoe and an aluminum fishing boat, along with safety gear.

The Marina House will also be upgraded with a full concession and a large wraparound deck with patio furniture and umbrellas overlooking Stuart Lake. Accessibility improvements are part of the project as well, including a new accessible outhouse, a wheelchair ramp to the Marina House, and a gentle-sloping ramp and dock with railings beside the boat launch to better support people who use mobility devices. The district said the upgrades are intended to make Cottonwood Marina a destination for boaters and non-boaters alike, while supporting local recreation, tourism, resident retention and attraction in the lakeside community.

Officials also noted that the iconic string lights will remain in place. For the 2026 season, moorage services are suspended, although the boat launch is expected to remain usable for most of the summer except for a brief closure during replacement work. The main marina parking lot remains closed to public vehicles and boat trailers, with parking redirected to Lakeshore Drive for the duration of construction.

The district said it will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
