A quirky Netflix gardening series filmed on Vancouver Island has blossomed into an Emmy nominee. This Is a Gardening Show, starring comedian Zach Galifianakis, has been nominated for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards. The nomination was announced this week by the Television Academy.

READ MORE: Zach Galifianakis’ new Netflix show filmed in B.C., highlights Vancouver Island The show is described as a “refreshing and whimsical take on gardening” with Galifianakis both learning and teaching about how to garden and grow food. “The way we get food is so perverse right now; I think we should talk about it,” says Galifianakis in the trailer.

“And what we’re leaving for the next generation, they might have to know this stuff.” Creative BC celebrated the recognition in a social media post, calling attention to the made-in-B.C. production and congratulating the team behind the series. The show was filmed primarily on Vancouver Island, including scenes in the Comox Valley, Nanaimo and Mount Washington and follows Galifianakis as he offers unconventional gardening advice with his trademark offbeat humour.

The series was produced by RadicalMedia in association with Billios Productions, with Galifianakis also serving as an executive producer. When production wrapped last year, the series generated buzz across the Island, where residents spotted film crews and Galifianakis in several communities. Galifianakis also has a home on Denman Island and is known to spend time in the area.

The series is one of four nominees in the Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series category, alongside Inside The Pitt, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette – A Love Untold and Shrinking: In It Together. Creative BC also noted another B.C.-connected production, Remarkably Bright Creatures, received Emmy nominations, including a Lead Actress nomination for Sally Field and a nomination for contemporary costumes.
