In a post to social media, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said officers responded to the area of Highway 401 near Townline Road at around 12:30 p.m. In an update, the OPP said eight vehicles were involved in the collision, including a transport truck.

In a statement to CBC Toronto Sunday, the OPP said 16 people were taken to hospital with injuries. One of the injured, the driver of a passenger vehicle, was transported to hospital with critical injuries, but was later pronounced dead. All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed near Townline Road, the OPP said.
