After a deadly period in 2025, Quebec police urge vigilance during construction holiday

Quebec provincial police (SQ) road patrol officers will be out in force starting Friday as the deadly construction holiday period begins, which was one of the deadliest on record in 2025.

The SQ said that last year’s two-week period was the worst in the past decade, with 38 deaths from 30 collisions. “This alarming statistic serves as a reminder that safety on transportation networks is a shared responsibility and that everyone can help prevent tragedies through vigilance and adherence to safety rules,” the SQ said in a news release.

In addition to the roads, SQ patrols will be increased on waterways and trails from July 17 to Aug. 2 to ensure safe travel practices. “Helmets are mandatory for off-road vehicle users,” the SQ said, which also “strongly recommends wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) during all water activities.” The SQ says that about a third of Quebecers take vacation during the construction holiday.

“In this context, caution, respecting safety rules, and adopting responsible behaviours are essential to preventing collisions and allowing everyone to enjoy their holidays safely,” the SQ said.
