People should limit time outside and consider rescheduling outdoor activities, Environment Canada said.

More serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pains and severe coughing, Environment Canada said. As of 5:45 p.m., Environment Canada had also issued a yellow-level warning for communities to the south and west of Ottawa like Perth, Renfrew and Sharbot Lake.

The alert was also in place for communities to the north of Gatineau, including Chelsea, Val-des-Monts, Maniwaki and Mont-Laurier. The air quality in Ottawa is expected to improve by Sunday morning, Environment Canada said.
