Arthur Street improvements in Elmira core now underway

The much-anticipated Arthur Street improvements along the downtown core of Elmira are finally underway. The first phase of the plan, ringing in around $2.5 million, will focus on asphalt resurfacing, replacement of existing sidewalks, removal of brick paving stones, and upgrades to streetlighting along Arthur between South Street E and Church Street. Crews will be on site until October 2026.

The work over the next few months however will not include cycling lanes, and will not include the popular Arthur Street and Church Street intersection. Phase 2, planned for construction in 2028 will extend from Church Street to Kenning Place. On its website, The Region of Waterloo said traffic will be able to get through Arthur Street during construction of the sidewalk improvements.

It also noted all businesses will stay open, and sidewalks will remain accessible. However, once the sidewalk is complete, road resurfacing on Arthur Street will have it fully shut down between South Street East and Church Street for approximately five days.
