The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an in-custody death that took place Saturday night in the northeast community of Abbeydale. At around 9:23 p.m., police responded to a home in the 0 to 100 block of Abbercove Road S.E. on reports of a break and enter involving a weapon. Police say the suspect fled the residence before they got there.
Officers say they were able to find the suspect but when they tried to take him into custody, he fought back and didn’t follow police directions. Police say at least one officer used their conductive energy weapon to subdue the man, who went into medical distress. He was transported to hospital, where he was declared dead.
No one else was injured. ASIRT has been called in to investigate.
