Business notes: New Saturday Poultry and Farm Market is at The Hub Published 5:45 am Friday, July 17, 2026 Shawnna Matsen of Rustic Roots Farm, and Becky Klasen of Chicken Town Hatchery have joined forces in an effort to support local farms, artisans and growers while creating community with their Poultry & Farm Market. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday at The Hub at Cowichan Station located at 2375 Koksilah Rd., until the end of August.
The inspiration behind the new Saturday Market was two-fold. Matsen and Klasen attended several successful Nanaimo Poultry and Farm Market swaps last year which were very affordable at a $2 drop-in, bringing several local producers, growers, and breeders into one place to sell their life’s work, dreams, and passions. Upon learning that there was only one scheduled this year at the Nanaimo Equestrian Association located at Beban Park, coupled with the new Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw proposed by the CVRD, they decided to

They had two markets last month which were a huge success. “The community was in arms to protest the changes to rural communities, farm stands restrictions, and backyard poultry,” said Klasen. “Farmers, growers, producers do not have it easy. We work around the clock, through rain, snow, heat to do what we love. So having a place, every two weeks, to have these folks proudly offer their work, I feel is a step in continuing the discussing around property rights, protection of the small lot producers, fostering community and encouraging folks to step out of their comfort zone and put out a table and sell your garden veggies, honey, and more.
