This summer, Chroma Musica’s VoiceCamp in Laval is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an original, high-energy production called “Return to Oz,” and it’s filled with laughs and disco-inspired adventure. “I’m really excited for this show,” said Cassyanna Ilceus, a 10-year-old camper playing Oz. “I love VoiceCamp because for me I’m a theater kid and I love singing and dancing.

The play brings together the worlds of The Wizard of Oz , The Wiz , and Wicked . Spectators get to smile all the way through and enjoy original songs as Dorothy returns to Oz to help her friends break a glitter-filled disco curse while rediscovering the power of friendship, forgiveness, and teamwork. (Pamela Pagano, CityNews) The 30-minute show, put together in just two weeks. The costumes and set were created by the campers who are six to 14 years old.

All while learning lines, rehearsing songs and choreography. Their third and final week is show time. “I definitely loved making our costumes and learning choreographies,” said 11-year-old camper, Thea Tsekeris.

The camp’s General Director, Dimitris Ilias, is amazed every year by the students’ talents since he and his wife began the Broadway camp 20 years ago. “I think it’s going to be a superb show,” he said, smiling. “It’s going to be very interesting for them to see little kids perform like pros.”

Adding to the celebration is a true full-circle moment: their stage director and script writer, Juliana Theos, is a former VoiceCamp camper who has since graduated from Concordia University with a degree in theatre and has returned to inspire the next generation of young performers. (Pamela Pagano, CityNews) All are welcome to attend the show taking place at Laval’s Palace Convention Center on July 15 at 6 p.m. and July 16 at 1 p.m. Tickets are 5.00$ and could be purchased at the door. “I’m really excited because I love to come to camp every year,” said Tsekeris.

“It’s one of my favorite places to come.” “I love this show. I love this camp,” added Ilceus.
