Charcoal Steak House has been serving Waterloo Region residents for 70 years and is marking the milestone with a special celebration next month. The Kitchener restaurant was purchased in 1956 by local business pioneers Del and Ortha Wideman . Back then, it was called the Charcoal Pit and contained 42 seats.
Two years later, it was renamed Charcoal Steak House and had its first relocation. By 1976, the establishment was moved to 2980 King St. E, where it still operates today. The landmark has continued to evolve over the decades with the additions of the adjoining Martini’s Bar and Patio and Del’s Italian Kitchen , operated by the Charcoal Group of Restaurants.
The steak house itself has served as the backdrop for many locals’ big moments like first dates, anniversaries, and even weddings. “Reaching 70 years is an incredible achievement and a moment to reflect on the people who have been part of our story,” said Jody Palubiski, CEO and Managing Partner of the Charcoal Group of Restaurants, in a release. “We are grateful for the generations of guests who have trusted us with their special occasions, the team members who have brought our hospitality to life and the community partners who have supported us along the way.”
Charcoal Steak House will offer special limited deals to diners through a “1956 Feature Week” that will run from Aug. 11 to Aug. 14. A 70th Anniversary Celebration is also planned for Aug. 15 and proceeds support the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Cardiac Care Centre.
