Charles River partners with Arovella on cell therapy testing

Gold slides as U.S.-Iran conflict lifts oil, hawkish Fed bets grow WILMINGTON, Mass. - Charles River Laboratories International Inc. (NYSE:CRL) announced today a collaboration with Arovella Therapeutics Ltd (ASX:ALA) to provide Good Manufacturing Practice Next Generation Sequencing services for cell characterization, according to a press release statement. The announcement comes as Charles River, with a market capitalization of $11.2 billion, trades near its 52-week high of $237.86, reflecting strong investor confidence with shares up 46% over the past year. The collaboration supports Arovella’s development of an Invariant Natural Killer T cell therapy platform for cancer treatment.

The FDA approved the use of NGS for viral safety testing of two cell banks that produce reagents used in the ALA-101 manufacturing process as part of an IND application. Charles River will perform NGS services for cell bank characterization and viral safety release testing on clinical batches of ALA-101. The therapy is designed to treat CD19+ B cell lymphomas and leukemias.

"The FDA’s acceptance of NGS in Arovella’s IND underscores the value of modern, GMP-ready sequencing to enable safer, more efficient development of cell and gene therapies," said Kerstin Dolph, Corporate Senior Vice President, Global Manufacturing at Charles River. Dr. Nicole van der Weerden, CEO of Arovella Therapeutics, said the collaboration strengthens the foundation of the company’s clinical manufacturing program by integrating advanced sequencing for cell bank characterization and validated viral safety tests for clinical batch release. While Charles River was not profitable over the last twelve months, InvestingPro Tips indicate that net income is expected to grow this year, with analysts forecasting earnings of $11.27 per share for 2026.

Charles River recently acquired Pathoquest, a provider of NGS solutions for characterization and quality control testing of biopharmaceutical products. The company operates 9 CGMP-compliant ISO cleanroom suites and has produced over 2,000 cell and viral banks.

Arovella is a biotechnology company developing iNKT cell therapy from Imperial College London technology to treat blood cancers and solid tumors. ALA-101 is being developed as an allogeneic cell therapy. In other recent news, Charles River Laboratories International has been the focus of several analyst upgrades and strategic developments.

Argus raised its price target for the company to $250 from $200, maintaining a Buy rating, citing the company’s mergers and acquisitions strategy as a key factor for potential growth and profitability. Morgan Stanley also upgraded the stock to Overweight from Equalweight, increasing the price target to $220 due to an uptick in biopharma funding, which is expected to benefit the company given its strong preclinical capabilities. CLSA followed suit by upgrading Charles River to Outperform from Hold, raising the price target to $219, pointing to a favorable regulatory environment in the U.S. and China.

In addition to these upgrades, Charles River announced the expansion of its AI-enabled digital pathology platform. This platform aims to reduce standard pathology timelines by at least one week while adhering to Good Laboratory Practice standards. Jefferies highlighted that AI adoption in pharmaceutical services, such as those by Charles River, could lead to significant cost savings in drug development.

These developments indicate a strategic focus on innovation and regulatory alignment, positioning the company for potential future growth.
