City of Kamloops plans info session for would-be council candidates Event for council prospects Those thinking about running for a seat on Kamloops city council this fall can attend a free candidate information session next month. In a news release, the City of Kamloops said the session will take place on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will be facilitated by Christina Benty, the former mayor of the Town of Golden, who has served in local government for 12 years and has more than 25 years of experience on policy governance boards.

“Your mayor and city councillors are your neighbours, your friends and your fellow citizens. We want to elect people who care,” Benty said in a news release. “However, caring in and of itself is not enough.

Governance takes both understanding and practiced skills. The most effective elected officials are the ones who understand the system, not the ones who blame the system.” Kristen Rodrigue, the city’s communications and strategic partnerships director, said council plays an integral part in shaping residents’ lives, and encouraged prospective candidates to take the time to learn the roles and responsibilities before putting their names forward.

“The position comes with a lot of responsibility and commitment. We want to provide those considering running in the fall’s municipal election with an opportunity to learn more about what exactly the role entails,” Rodrigue said. “Who better to learn from than someone who’s done the job?”

The free session will be held in the Kia Lounge at Sandman Centre, and will be limited to 50 attendees. Pre-registration is required. It opens at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15.

The city said as the session will provide valuable information for voters, a recording will be available on the city’s YouTube channel shortly after the event. More information can be found here. Election day is Oct. 17.
