Thursday was a busy day for the boys at the Tour de l’Abitibi. First up was a short, but fast, 7.9-km TT. Carter Deveer entered the contre-la-montre in the brown jersey and continued his impressive run, taking a dominant victory.

Stage 3a at the Tour de l’Abitibi Deveer , riding for the national team but usually on the Bahrain Victorious junior development squad, smoked the chrono. Averaging just under 48 km/h, he put four seconds into fellow Canuck Mitchell Williams and another 10 into Kiwi Josh Davies. With the win, he padded his overall lead going into the second race of the day, a short but fast stage in Rouyn-Noranda.

Stage 3b recap The 58.4-km stage was controlled almost from start to finish by the sprinters’ teams. They quickly reeled in every attack in the hopes to set up a good ole bunch sprint. Still, lots of riders tried to animate the race early anyway.

A six-rider break formed around the 16.8-km mark but was brought back before it could build a meaningful advantage. Keaton Schisler (KW Cycling Academy pb Liftow Liftrucks) launched a solo move, opening a gap of about 10 seconds before the peloton shut it down before the halfway point. Along the way, intermediate sprints went to Deveer and New Zealand’s Alex Bishop.

As expected, the stage came down to a bunch sprint. Simon Guyon (Alliance Expertismed) timed his effort perfectly, beating Zachari Moreau (Équipe du Québec) and Canada’s Julien Bélanger in a tight finish to take the victory. There are three stages left at the Tour de l’Abitibi, and aggressive racing and crosswinds can still shake things up in the overall standings.

On Friday, the riders take on a 135.7-km stage from Ville-Marie to Notre-Dame-du-Nord. The 56th edition of the longstanding junior stage race wraps up with Stage 6 on Sunday in Rouyn-Noranda.
