Higher education is costly. That’s not news. But what isn’t generally acknowledged is how much of that cost is absorbed by the taxpayer.

The figures vary from province to province, but nationally, on average, only about 30% of the cost of post-secondary education is covered by tuition fees. The rest is subsidized

Ontario has the highest tuition rate, with costs at about 40%. Students in Manitoba have it much easier by comparison. Thanks to our provincial government’s generosity, students here pay only 15% to 20% of the cost of their university education.

Foreign students do pay a higher rate.
