Monahan makes DCS history as first Grade 12 to compete in three provincial championships in one year

Duncan Christian School Chargers name Athletes of the Year Published 5:45 am Monday, July 13, 2026 Sarah Monahan, Syrius Guo and Nick Abi Hanna have been named the Duncan Christian School Senior Athletes of the Year. The trio, was honoured earlier this month at the annual athletics awards banquet, along with Junior Athletes of the Year Sam Crosswell and Eliana Ayensu.

“The recipients have made meaningful contributions across several teams, showing strong athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship,” said Tom Veenstra, the school’s athletic director. “They displayed commitment and encouragement that positively influenced their teammates, placed the needs of the team first, and reflected the values of integrity, perseverance, humility, and respect both on and off the field.” Monahan made school history this year as the first Grade 12 student-athlete to compete in three provincial championships in a single season.

She was named the Most Valuable Player on the senior girls basketball team, while also earning Island tournament MVP honours and a Player of the Game award at the provincial championships. Monahan also scored in every soccer tournament in her Grade 12 season, and was the B.C. School Sports Athlete of the Month for May. Veenstra said she was an “exemplary team player who consistently demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship in every sport.”

Guo and Abi Hanna shared the senior boys Athletes of the Year award after each competing in three sports during the school year. Guo was named MVP of the badminton team and earned the Most Sportsmanlike award in basketball. He was also selected by Vancouver Island coaches to play in the Island All-Star basketball game.

A key contributor on the senior boys volleyball team as well, Guo collected numerous Player of the Game honours in both volleyball and basketball. “He is a positive, kind, respectful, and determined athlete,” Veenstra said. Abi Hanna competed in volleyball, basketball and soccer.

On the basketball court, he was named the team’s MVP, earned second-team all-star honours and received multiple Player of the Game awards. He also served as a basketball referee. In volleyball, Abi Hanna was recognized as the senior boys team’s Most Improved Player, while he was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player on the senior boys soccer team.

A junior athlete, Ayensu was called up and competed in all three senior girls provincial championships this year: volleyball, basketball and soccer. She was a key contributor to the soccer squad, and was Player of the Game in a provincial championship basketball game. She was also the junior girls volleyball and basketball Most Inspirational Player of the year.

Crosswell was also called up to play on three senior teams: volleyball, basketball, and soccer. “He rose in ability and skill to be a strong force on all three teams,” said Veenstra. “Watch for this athlete next year as he continues to grow in ability and character.”

Crosswell was also an assistant referee for numerous soccer games.
