Estabrooks to compete for Nenshi’s seat in Edmonton-Strathcona in next provincial election

The former journalist and public school board trustee made the announcement Friday morning at Frank’s Community Pub in the riding. “After a decade of fighting for public education and public health care I am ready to join the fight for a new government in Alberta.

The Alberta NDP are the competent and caring leaders this province needs,” she said in a statement. Current Edmonton-Strathcona representative, Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi, announced on Thursday that he would run in a to-be-determined Calgary riding next year.

Estabrooks ran for the federal NDP in Edmonton-Centre in 2025, finishing third place with 15 per cent of the vote. The Conservatives’ Sayid Ahmed earned nearly 40 per cent of the vote, while the Liberals’ Eleanor Olszewski won it with 44 per cent. Alberta’s next provincial general election is scheduled for Oct. 18, 2027.

Edmonton-Strathcona was previously held by former Alberta premier Rachel Notley. Her stepping down triggered the byelection that Nenshi won . Estabrooks said she was excited to be running in a riding with a long history of NDP support.
