The Senate was expected to give final approval of a bill to abolish capital punishment today, clearing way for the royal assent that would officially make it law. Paul Kates continues to lead the Sault contingent at the Ontario amateur golf tournament in Toronto, 12 strokes off the leader’s pace. Four new stores will open in the former Canadian Tire building on Queen Street East, between Elgin and Bruce streets, during the next two months.

Myra Piirto is a co-winner of the Business and Professional Women’s national young career woman title. She is an English teacher. Barbara Duffin and Keith Knight are featured in Sault Theatre Workshop’s production of The Owl and the Pussycat at the Porter House Lounge.

July 16, 1951 T.E. Simpson, a former member of parliament for West Algoma, died July 15. He was 77. Simpson was mayor of Sault Ste.

Marie for four terms before entering federal politics in 1917. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club. The recently formed Greyhound Hockey Committee is expected to report on the backing which senior hockey can expect this winter from major industries of the city at a public meeting tonight at Memorial Gardens.

July 16, 1926 C. Wilson, K. McLurg, S. Yull, F. Anderson and G. Hunter are among 30 boys from the Y and the Rotary club who will spend 10 days at Camp Pauwating at Island Lake. Etta Odierna, 548 Albert St. W., is a Queen of Algoma candidate for Community Night of the Rotary Club. Other candidates include Vera Tulloch, Nellie Brown, Lillian Simmons and Nora Horgan.
