By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on July 16, 2026. nestdesk@medicinehatnews.com Hatters can now grab their free tickets to welcome more than 1,700 athletes and coaches as well as thousands of visitors to Medicine Hat for the Special Olympics Canada Opening Ceremonies that will be held at Co-op Place.

The Opening Ceremonies will officially kick off the week of the Games from August 11-15 with athletes competing in 10 different sporting events at different venues throughout the city. The opening ceremony will kick off at 6 p.m. and will bring together athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters from across the country to mark the start of the Games. The opening ceremony will feature a vibrant Parade of Athletes, inspirational performances and special guests, messages of unity, courage and inclusion and the official lighting of the Special Olympics Flame.

“Whether you’re cheering on a loved one, supporting the movement, or experiencing Special Olympics for the first time, this celebration promises heartfelt moments, proud smiles and memories that will last a lifetime,” reads a press release. Tickets can be reserved by visiting Medicine Hat’s online ticket website at buy.tixx.ca where a link can be found on the homepage. Tickets will be reserved for 10 minutes while users complete their registration.

Special Olympics Games organizers are also planning to host a “Solar Plunge” event leading up to the opening ceremonies on August 11 that is similar to the annual Polar Plunge held in February. The event will raise funding for Special Olympics Canada and allow Hatters to cool down before the Games heat up in less than 26 days. Tonight, Games organizers are hosting their second evening of a volunteer preparation night at Medicine Hat College aimed at boosting volunteer numbers as the event draws closer.

Tonight from 6-9, residents can stop by the main lobby of the college to receive assistance on any and all parts of the journey to become Special Olympics volunteers. The Games is seeking to fill all volunteer roles and is specially looking for those who could help with medical or security aspects of the Games.
