Google has been steadily building out its Gemini-powered writing tools across the Workspace ecosystem, but one of the most heavily used integrations is easily the "Help me write" feature inside Gmail. Having an AI draft a quick response is incredibly convenient, but up until now, adjusting that draft felt a bit rigid. If the AI's first attempt wasn't exactly what you were looking for, you were previously forced to rely on a few generic, preset buttons like "Polish," "Formalize," or "Shorten."

Thankfully, Google is finally removing those guardrails to give users exact control over their AI-generated emails. According to a new post on the Google Workspace Updates blog, you can now use natural language to give precise, custom instructions to the AI right inside the Gmail prompt bar. Total control over your email drafts Instead of hoping a generic "Polish" button fixes the tone of your message, you can now tell Gemini exactly what to change.

If the AI generates a solid baseline but misses a crucial piece of context, you can simply type a custom refinement like, "add a missing detail to the second line about the budget," or "include a deadline for next Friday." Gmail will instantly process the custom instruction and update the draft to reflect your specific tweaks. Google is also adding a highly requested quality-of-life feature alongside this update: Undo and Redo buttons.

If you give the AI a custom instruction and the resulting edit completely ruins the flow of your email, you can instantly revert back to the previous version without having to start the entire prompt chain over from scratch. Rollout timeline and who gets it The best news is that you won't have to wait long to start testing this out. The update is actively rolling out right now across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with Google expecting the rollout to be fully completed by July 20, 2026.

Because this is a core Gemini feature, it is tied to specific Workspace and consumer subscription tiers.
