Cam Tran cites economic pressures, high tariffs behind decision to close plant of nearly 30 years

Transformer-manufacturing company to shut down its Chilliwack facility Published 11:28 am Saturday, July 11, 2026 A transformer-manufacturing facility in Chilliwack will be shutting down at the end of August, citing economic pressures and the high cost of tariffs. Cam Tran is closing its Chilliwack location which has been around for nearly 30 years.

The company was purchased by an American company two years ago. They make various transformers including overhead ones attached to hydro poles, and pad-mounted transformers often identified as green, metal boxes. Cam Tran made the announcement on July 10.

“This was an extremely difficult decision because of the impact on our employees and the Chilliwack community,” said Marco Barbosa, president of Cam Tran. “While a number of factors influenced this decision, including economic pressures, changing market conditions, rising costs, and tariffs, our focus is on ensuring the long-term strength and competitiveness of our business while supporting employees through this transition.” Cam Tran is the largest Canadian manufacturer of distribution transformers and the largest North American producer of amorphous metal transformers.

Operations at the Chilliwack facility on Charles Street will be shut down in phases over the coming months, with the expected end day to be Aug. 28. The company stated that it has informed its employees of the decision and is “committed to supporting affected team members” throughout the transition. A total of 43 jobs will be lost, according to other media reports.

“We are deeply grateful for the dedication and contributions of our Chilliwack team,” Barbosa added. The company has five facilities across Canada, employing more than 400 employees. Incorporated in 1982, and with its head office in Colborne, Ont., Cam Tran opened its Chilliwack facility in 1997.

Cam Tran is a privately owned Canadian company specializing in manufacturing, repair and renewal of all types of oil filled distribution transformers, according to their website. Central Moloney Inc. (CMI) an Arkansas-based company acquired Cam Tran in 2024. CMI and Cam Tran operate under separate brands.
